Scleral Lenses
Scleral lenses are large diameter lenses made of gas permeable materials that allow oxygen to reach the eye. These customized medical devices completely cover the cornea (the clear tissue over the colored part of the eye) and rest on the sclera (the white part of the eye.)
Scleral lenses allow the cornea to be bathed in a tear reservoir all day, protecting the ocular surface. They have been used successfully to treat severe dry eye disease including ocular surface disease due to neurotrophic keratopathy or autoimmune conditions such as Sjogren’s syndrome.
Scleral lenses also mask any corneal irregularities that make it difficult to obtain clear vision with glasses. Therefore, scleral lenses may be the best option to improve the vision of patients with keratoconus, pellucid marginal degeneration, post-surgical ectasia, or corneal scarring.
