Keratoconus
In mild cases, glasses can correct the myopia (nearsightedness) and astigmatism that develops in keratoconus. As the condition progresses, glasses may not provide adequate visual quality and specialty contact lenses may be recommended. Specialty contact lenses include customized soft contact lenses, corneal gas permeable lenses (GP lenses), hybrid lenses (GP lens center with soft contact lens surrounding skirt), and scleral lenses.
Another treatment called corneal cross-linking was recently approved by the FDA and is effective in slowing down or stopping the progression of keratoconus. Surgical treatments for keratoconus include corneal intacs and corneal transplantation.
Palos Eye Professionals works closely with corneal ophthalmologists to co-manage patients in need of these procedures. Often times, patients will need to be refit with contact lenses after cross-linking or surgery.
